Ricky Williams running with the Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens have signed veteran running back Ricky Williams to replace Willis McGahee, who they let go days before training camp.
Williams agreed to a two-year deal, the team announced on Monday.
The former Heisman Trophy played last season with the Miami Dolphins and if everything goes well with his physical on Tuesday, Williams will work in tandem with Ray Rice.
“He's a veteran that brings a lot of leadership,” Rice said. “I'm looking to learn a lot from him. I'm looking forward to working with him.”
A former Pro Bowler, Williams rushed for a career-high 1,853 yards to

Spare us Gordon Brown. You sacrificed your morals to Rupert Murdoch long ago

So much for damage limitation. Rupert Murdoch’s ruthless closure of the News of the World, with the loss of an estimated 200 jobs, although not the one held by Rebekah Brooks, has backfired spectacularly. As one Twitter wit observed, this was the first radical surgery in which they decided to remove the healthy tissue and left the cancer in place.
“Mr Murdoch doesn’t explain himself. He meets power with power,” said his biographer, Michael Wolff. Not this time. The old bloke with his blonde personal trainer in Hyde Park suddenly looked less like a media mogul than a bewildered escapee

London 2012 Olympics: IOC to bring in gambling ban for athletes, officials and 'insiders'

The ban will apply to all 11,000 athletes, their coaches and support staff, VIPs and accredited politicians and journalists. It will also cover anybody who has access to inside information of the sporting competition or competing athletes.
The IOC hopes the tougher stance will help combat illegal and irregular betting, which president Jacques Rogge has called the biggest threat to the credibility and integrity of sport.
In his opening address at the 123rd IOC session in Durban, Rogge said there was “no room for complacency".
He added: “Protecting the integrity of sport is a priority for the IOC. In all

An open letter to basketball journalists, as the NBA lockout commences

Dear Comrades:
On the occasion of your sport's lockout, I'd like to impart a bit of advice. As you know, the NFL's been boarded up since March, and it's been no church picnic for the football media, to say the least. We've been reporting different levels of miscommunication, no communication, and excommunication for months, and we're all more than a little tired of it. Speaking for myself, it's far more interesting to go over Saints-Ravens tape than it is to review the latest 80-page legal document from one side or the other, earning an informal junior law degree by virtue

Joe Gibbs behind NFL rookie financial seminar this week

Joe Gibbs had witnessed the jarring scene too many times.
"A player would be upset with his contract, (and) we'd be in serious discussions," says the Hall of Famer who guided the Washington Redskins to all three of their Super Bowl titles during his 16-year head coaching career while recalling moments that typically unfolded in his office. "And during the conversation, it dawns on you, 'Are you in financial trouble?' That happens over and over again.
"It played out a lot."
Even in retirement — Gibbs stepped down from his second stint with the Redskins after the 2007 season —

NFL's best: Clay Matthews and the top 10 outside LBs of 2011

In a quarterback-driven league, elite outside linebackers are the pass-rushing demons who thrive on driving those men under center into the ground.
Think of them as chaos-causing, counter-punching spread defenders with the versatility to drop into coverage or stop the run when they're not harassing, hurrying and pummeling signal callers in an increasingly pass-heavy, wide-open game.
Exotic zone blitzes are built on the backs of whirlwind outside linebackers who run like deer and keep offensive coordinators up nights plotting ways to block the relentless disruptors ESPN analyst and former quarterback Trent Dilfer calls game-plan wreckers.
Many of these human wrecking

Heat regain home court advantage

Dwyane Wade kept soaring and scoring, doing everything he could to get the Miami Heat a crucial win towards an NBA title.
Chris Bosh and Udonis Haslem provided the final push to seal the key victory.
Bosh made a 16-foot, go-ahead jumper from the baseline with 39.6 seconds left and Haslem pestered Dirk Nowitzki the rest of the way as the Heat held on for an 88-86 victory over the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday night for a 2-1 lead in the NBA finals.
“This is a total win,” said Wade, who led Miami with 29 points and 11 rebounds. “You

CHICAGO — For four years, Jimmermania has been building up in Utah. Has it possibly not reached a crescendo in the state?

Consider the interest mutual.
"Yeah, that would be something that would be very cool," the star guard from BYU said Thursday at the NBA Draft Combine about the possibility of being drafted by the Jazz.

Colts: Time to find Peyton Manning's successor coming 'soon'

In Indianapolis, it's time to think about the post-Peyton Manning era.
Colts president Bill Polian said the team has begun the process of considering a plan for how to replace Manning, 35.
The Colts have even been working out quarterbacks such as TCU's Andy Dalton and Nevada's Colin Kaepernick, possible selections in this month's draft.
"Quarterback's an issue, probably not a front-burner issue, but an issue nonetheless because while Peyton's not at the end of his career, it's approaching faster than it has in the past," Polian told the Indianapolis Star. "I wouldn't rule that out in the right situation."
